Germany (officially: the Federal Republic of Germany) is a country in north-central Europe. It borders on Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic and Poland. Germany is a federal parliamentary republic consisting of sixteen states (Bundesländer). Berlin is the capital and the largest city of Germany. After World War II the territory of Germany was divided into 2 states: the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic. It was only in 1990 that the reunification of Germany took place. Today the country is a member of the UNO, NATO, the G8 and other organisations. Germany has the largest population among the EU countries (about 82 million people).
